Alas Dr. Karunanidhi is no more

Alas Dr. Karunanidhi is no more

                                                V. M. Khaleelur Rahman

In the passing away of the political legend Dr. M. Karunanidhi, the most popular, revolutionary and reformist leader who has undoubtedly done great service for the uplift of the backward people, not only Tamil Nadu but the whole India is in deep grief forgetting political and ideological differences.

As far as the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu is concerned, the five- time former Chief Minister Dr. Karunanidhi was close with them and participated in their cultural and educational activities with great interest, understood their grievances and redressed them to a great extent. He was responsible in keeping intact the age old cordial relations of different sections of the people in Tamil Nadu.

He was also a great Tamil poet and orator, the like of whom are rare. He contributed much for the development of the Tamil language.

Even during the period of the Emergency rule of former Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Tamil Nadu was peaceful and its impact was not felt here.

Let us all salute and pay tributes to him. It is hoped that his son Mr. M.K. Stalin and other DMK leaders will follow his guidelines for peaceful co-existence of different religious and linguistic people and development of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Leather Market - August 2018

CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

                                                              V M Khaleelur Rahman

There seems to be no big change in the market but it is erratic now. Only those exporters of leather and shoes who have orders are in the market and not others. The fact is that most exporters are not having orders.

There is interest only for higher grades of tanned goat skins such as 4/6 sq. ft. R/V/IF at around Rs.65 and 5/8 sq. ft. R/V/IF at around Rs.80 per sq. ft. There are also reports of sales in 5/8 sq. ft. V and IF combined at around Rs.77 and 5/8 sq. ft. LIF at around Rs.55 per sq. ft.

Td. Goat skins Suedes 4/6 and 5/8 sq. ft. are sold at around Rs.38 and 43 per sq. ft. respectively whereas Linings in the same sizes are sold at around Rs.33 and 38 per sq. ft. respectively.

Lower selections as such Rejection and Langda are yet to get support from North Indian customers who were once regular buyers. However there are reports of some customers showing interest. Prices fetched for these items are around Rs.12 and 8 per sq. ft. in good qualities and selections.

As far as raw goat skins are concerned, here again demand is only for good higher selections in reputed raw centres like Miraj at different prices depending on quality and selection up to Rs.150 per piece. In other raw skin centres like Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Hubli etc. generally speaking the prevailing prices are at around Rs.40 per piece.

Red hair sheep skins in good quality and big size are sold at around Rs.120 per piece.
There are also reports of some export companies being closed because of heavy losses and inability to continue business. It seems running a tannery in the present situation is a Himalayan task.

Quotations of tanners are as follows:

Export Orders

Some big exporters have sold as usual their S/C goat upper and lining leathers at around US $2.50 and US$ 1.80 per sq. ft. Small exporters are in a tight corner as getting overseas orders is not easy and in most cases impossible.

Japanese customers are not in the market.

Remembering the great Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his 3rd death anniversary.

REMEMBERING THE GREAT DR. A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM

Today is the 3rd death anniversary of the great Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the great scientist and former President of India. He left us in Shillong on Monday, 27th July 2015. Let us remember him and pay tributes to him by praying for his maghfirath. May his soul rest in peace.

Dr. Kalam was the people’s President. All liked him and more so the students from elementary to college levels. We, the people of Ambur, were lucky to have him in our midst. He came to Ambur at the invitation of the Ambur Muslim Educational Society (AMES) and inaugurated its Centenary Celebrations held on 5th and 6th September 2006 in the campus of the Mazharul Uloom Higher Secondary School, Ambur.  The inaugural function took place on 4th September 2006 along with Question-Answer session.

Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam’s inaugural address was illuminating, power-packed and question-answer session full of wise thoughts, so necessary for everyone particularly the students who are to shape the destiny of our country –the beautiful India – in future.
We must be proud that Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a scientist par excellence, who was determined to mould the minds of the students for better India and make India a developed nation before 2020 was the President of India.

Dr. Kalam was a great “ teacher ” worth the name. He gave importance to the teaching profession and encouraged students to dream their goals and endeavour their best to achieve them. He asked everyone to be honest and clean our society from evils like corruption.

I still remember how the people of Ambur were delighted in welcoming him at Ambur and listening to his lecture and interaction with the students which were full of honest and inspiring advice. He felt at home in the midst of the people there and wished them well.

At that time Mr. Chand Basha was the Headmaster of the Mazharul Uloom Higher Secondary School. This is one of the six institutions established and managed by the Ambur Muslim Educational Society including a full fledged Science and Arts College. He was pleasantly surprised when Dr. Abdul Kalam called him to the dais and handed over some books for the school. All this shows the intense interest he had in the spread of education and knowledge. He strongly believed that it is education which can change ones destiny for better and make our country a progressive and prosperous one.

Dr. Abdul Kalam will always be remembered for his role as an excellent scientist, as a people’s president, as a good writer and orator and  most importantly as a humble and genuine human being. It is amazing how he carried himself and mingled with people both rich and poor. His simplicity and good nature won hearts and his words and inspirational speeches made people think and work for a better and bright future.

Dr. Kalam was a man of principles and led a simple life working for the country and inspiring the people, particularly students, till his last. His passing away was so sudden. There is a good lesson even in his so simple passing away which can be described as a mercy of the Almighty Allah.

The nation will always miss him. May his soul rest in peace.

Real Happiness of Eid

REAL HAPPINESS OF EID

BY V. M. Khaleelur Rahman

Eid-ul-Fitr or Ramadan Eid is celebrated as a day of thanksgiving to God after successful completion of the month-long fasting from dawn to dusk during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and on sighting the crescent moon of the 10th month called Shawwal. Ramadan is meant for fasting, worship and charity, and also for self-introspection for the purpose of purification of one's soul and body by giving up bad and attaining good things. The Holy Quran says, "Fasting is prescribed to you as it was to those before you so that you may learn self-restraint." Fasting brings people together and creates a sense of camaraderie among them. It inculcates in them righteous conduct, to be good people and brotherhood of man by eradicating evils such as anger, greed and malice.

Prophet Mohammed (Sal-am) has said, "Do not belittle even the smallest act of kindness even if it is no more than meeting your neighbour with a smiling and cheerful face. We should not consider any charity small or not worth doing. Charity, big or small, should be given in a pleasant manner without hurting the feeling of its receivers and with the thought that we are only discharging a religious duty from the wealth God has given us." According to Islam even our day-to-day acts, like being kind to others at home and outside, are charity and it makes a big difference in our relations with them.

Once when Prophet Mohammed (Sal-am) was on his way to Idgah for Id prayers, he saw a poor boy about five-years-old sitting on the pavement sadly. He went near him and asked, "Why are you alone here, my dear boy?" The boy started weeping and said, "I am an orphan with nobody to care for me." The Prophet could not bear the pathetic words of the poor boy and consoled him saying, "From now on you can look to me as your father and Ayesha as your mother," and returned home with him. When his wife Ayesha fed him and dressed him well for Id prayers the Prophet lifted him on his shoulders and said, "Ayesha, this is the happiest Id for me. I experience true happiness at the happiness of this little orphan boy." He was a great benefactor of humanity and his mission right from the beginning to end was to see that every individual maintained his self-respect free from any sort of slavery.

Chennai Leather Market - June 2018

CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

V M Khaleelur Rahman

In Chennai leather market demand continues for grain selection of higher grades in tanned goat skins. Exporters of shoes buy 4/6 ABC at around Rs.95 per sq. ft. and R/V/IF combined at around Rs.70 per sq. ft. whereas leather exporters mostly show interest for 4/6 and 5/7 sq. ft. goat lining leathers at around Rs.38 and Rs.45 per sq. ft. respectively. Tanned Suede skins are slow at movements at around Rs.40 per sq. ft.

As far as lower selections such as Rejection and Langda are concerned, the less said the better. Demand continues to be limited at around Rs.13 and 10 per sq. ft. Some tanners have sold even at much reduced prices than these. In other words prices are erratic and tanners have no option but to make desperate sales as they cannot hold stock for long as they are hard pressed for money.

Exporters say that China and Pakistan are big competitors in the world leather market. But Indian exporters are trying their best to face this challenge and market their products. Of course there are long time overseas customers of Indian exporters who prefer Tamil Nadu tanned goat skins and finished leathers because of their qualities and standards.

Quotations of tanners are as follows:

Grain Selection:

4/6 sq. ft. Run Rs.95, Fifths R.75, Inf. Fifths Rs.65 and LIF Rs.55

Lining Selection:

Mesh Selection:

4/6 sq. ft. 29 and 5/8 sq. ft. Rs.33

All prices are per sq. ft.

Export Orders

It is learnt that some big exporters have sold their S/C better quality upper leathers at around Rs.2.50 and lining leathers at around Rs.1.80. As higher selections are not easily available in the market tanners have increased their prices mainly for upper leathers. Small exporters have limited business with their regular customers but are not able to get orders for big quantities.

As regards F/C sheep leathers, Japanese customers are slowly showing interest for 5/7 sq. ft. All Suede at around JY180 but exporters say this is not workable. Rejections in 4/6 and 5/7 sq. ft. are sold at around JY 110 and 100 per sq. ft. C&F by sea respectively.
