Chennai Leather Market - April 2018

CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

V. M. Khaleelur Rahman

Activities in Chennai leather market have not undergone any big changes. The situation is almost the same and tanners are not happy at all as selling is not easy and making money is a Himalayan task.  Only higher grades find buyers and not lower selections.

Big shoe manufacturers are interested in higher grades of tanned goat skins. Some tanners have sold 5/6 sq. ft. Fifths and Inf. Fifths at around Rs.75 and 65 per sq. ft. respectively whereas R/V/IF/LIF combined in 4/6 sq. ft. has been sold at around Rs.58 per sq. ft.

As far as shoe suede is concerned, there is no much demand. It is reported that some tanners have sold this item at around Rs.43 per sq. ft. Local Rejection and Langda are not moving easily. Prices obtained for them are just Rs.13 and 10 per sq. ft. respectively. Raw skin prices are erratic everywhere in the country. There is no interest for lower selections at all. It is reported that in some centres unsalable rejection raw skins are simply buried.

Quotations of tanners

E.I. Tanned Goat Skins

Grain selection: 5/7 sq. ft. Run Rs.90, Fifths Rs.75, Inf. Fifths Rs.65 and LIF Rs.55
Suede Selection: 4/6 sq. ft. Rs.42
Lining Selection: 5/7 sq. ft. Rs.40 and 4/6 sq. ft. Rs.36
Mesh selection: 5/8 sq. ft. Rs.31
All prices are per sq. ft.

Export Contracts

Some reputed exporters continue to sell their upper and lining leathers at around US $ 2.25 and 1.65 per sq. ft. respectively. But here again business is limited. One or two Japanese customers buy F/C sheep leather Rejection at around Japanese Yen 100 per sq. ft. This business is also not regular.

Hong Kong Leather Fair 2018

According to reports available here from exporters who visited the Asia Pacific Leather Fair held in the middle of March 2018, it was disappointing. Overseas customers were “pick and choose” in their business as they are having huge stocks of unsold tanned and finished hides and skins. Only heavy weights and better grades were of interest to them. Buffalo calf and cow calf exporters were able to sell their quality leathers at around US$ 3.00 per sq. ft. Goat upper and lining exporters fetched some business at unchanged prices quoted above. However some reputed exporters might have sold even at higher prices but exact reports are not available. The undeniable fact is that the leather trade is passing through a difficult period and tanners are in a tight corner not knowing how to manage their business.

Maulana Azad's 60th death anniversary observed

Maulana Azad’s 60th death anniversary observed

New Delhi: A function was held on the occasion of 20th death anniversary of the first Education Minister of Independent India Bharat Ratna, Maulana Azad at his mausoleum near Jama Masjid, Meena Bazaar, Delhi by the ICCR.
Vinay Prabhakar Sahasrabuddhe, the ICCR Chairman, stated that that even today, 60 years after his death, Maulana is the right choice for the Nobel Peace Prize as he spent all his life joining lacerated hearts and hurt souls.
Firoz Bakht Ahmed, noted social worker Azad grandnephew, said that India needs politicians of the stature of Azad whose knowledge in philosophy, Islamic ideology and Indian culture was encyclopedic. Bakht who was in Pune at Azam Campus deliver an extension lecture on Maulana, lamented that no key leader from the state and central government attended the death anniversary function of Maulana Azad who was such a towering personality.

Extension lecture at Azam Campus, Pune
Riva Ganguly, the director ICCR told that, that though born in a predominantly Hindu environment, Azad was bold enough to propagate nationalism to Muslims at variance with the prevalent political consciousness based on communalised politics.
Khwaja Iftekhar Ahmed , Chairman Inter-faith Harmony Foundation of India, said that Maulana Azad focused on education. After the formation of the government, he chose the portfolio of education so as to pay attention to girls’ education especially Muslims. Khwaja said Azad's writings must be made popular in today's media as he spoke of communal concord and his watchword was assimilation at all levels.
As the Canadian Prime Minister was to visit Jama Masjid, the function was shortened. Meanwhile, the floral tributes from the President and Vice President, were laid on the shrine The Vice President sent a message that Maulana Azad's greatest claim to fame, no doubt, was his effort to preserve India's unity as an undivided nation. He failed, but that was because he got no support from his compatriots.

Chennai Leather Market - February 2018

CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET
V M Khaleelur Rahman

Chennai leather market is almost normal in tanned goat skins. Exporters of footwear are showing interest mostly for 4/6 sq. ft. Fifths and Inferior Fifths at around Rs.75 and 65 per sq. ft. respectively. Demand for Run selection is meagre at around Rs.90 per sq. ft. Suede, Lining, Rejection and Langda selections are also slow in movements. Prices available for them in 4/6 sq. ft. size are at around Rs.40, 33, 12 and 9 per sq. ft. respectively. Tanners are not able to make money. They complain the present market is not workable at all. It has to be noted that they have to pay Rs.15 per sq. ft. as tanning expenses for converting raw skins to tanned skins. They suffer heavy losses in selling their Rejection and Langda.

As far as raw goat skins are concerned, prevailing prices are between Rs.50 and 200/- per piece depending on area, quality, size and selection.

Tanners are quoting as follows:

E.I. Tannd Goat Skins:

3/5 sq. ft. Run Rs.95, Fifths Rs.80, Inf. Fifths Rs.70 and LIF Rs.60
4/6 sq. ft. Run Rs.90, Fifths Rs.75, Inf. Fifths Rs.65 and LIF Rs.55
4/6 sq. ft. Suede Rs.40 and Stout Suede Rs.44
4/6 sq. ft. Lining Rs.35 and 5/7 Lining Rs.38
Rejection Rs.13 and Langda Rs.10
All prices are per sq. ft.

Export Business

It is learnt that some big exporters are able to sell their upper and lining leathers at around US $ 2.25 and 1.75 per sq. ft. respectively but small exporters find it difficult to market their goods in the world market due to limited demand and heavy competition by foreign exporters. However Indian exporters are endeavouring their best to market their products which are world class in quality. Japanese customers have started showing interest for goat, sheep and cow leathers. Many Chennai based exporters have made offers to them. Market is expected to pick up slowly. It is hoped that the Rs.2600 crore package announced by the government for the leather and footwear sector will benefit the leather industry which is in a bad shape now.

Offers of exporters are at around the following prices:

Chennai Leather Market - January 2018

CHENNAI LEAHER MARKET

V. M. Khaleelur Rahman

In the Chennai leather market activities were slow due to Christmas and New Year holidays. As usual big shoe and leather exporters operated in the market. They bought E.I. Tanned Goat Skins 5/6 sq. ft. Fifth at around Rs.75, Inf. Fifth at around Rs.65 and 4/6 sq. ft. R/V/IF/LIF combined at around Rs.60 per sq. ft. However quantities sold were not much. There was some demand for tanned goat shoe  suedes at around Rs.42 and garment suedes at around Rs.40 per sq. ft.  Rejection and Langda were slow in movements.

In raw skin centres throughout the country prices continue to be erratic and selling is not easy for goat as well as sheep skins. Only top grades were of interest to tanners at different prices depending on quality and selection. Generally speaking in Centres like Miraj raw goat skins were quoted at around Rs.150 whereas in other Centres like Hyderabad and Vijayawada the price was at around Rs.50 per piece. There were no takers for Rejections.

As far as export is concerned only reputed tanners were able to sell small quantities in 4/6 sq. ft. upper leathers at around US$ 2.20 and lining leathers at around US$ 1.65 per sq. ft.

Tanners and leather exporters feel and demand that there should be no restrictions on the export of any sort of skin in the present difficult times. In their opinion it is the only way to save the leather industry from further collapse. However exporters of leather products do not seem to endorse this stand except some.

Quotations are as follows:
E.I. Tanned Goat Skins

Grain selection : 5/7 sq. ft. Run/V Rs.90, V Rs.75, IF Rs.65 and LIF Rs.55

Overseas customers are very choosy in their operations. While European and Japanese importers are very slow in purchases, Chinese and Hong Kong buyers are somewhat active.  But prices available are low and unworkable to exporters. However it is expected that in the current year 2018 things would be better for tanners and exporters who are now struggling for survival.
