There seems to be no change for the better in the Chennai
leather market. The same sellers, the same buyers and the same routine limited transactions
are witnessed in the market. Some big Shoe and leather exporters are interested
in buying tanned goat skins ABC 4/6 sq. ft. at Rs.90, 5/7 sq. ft. at Rs.100,
Suede 4/6 sq. ft. at Rs.38, Lining 4/6 sq. ft. at Rs.34 and 5/7 at Rs.39 per
sq. ft.
As far as local items Rejection and Langda are concerned,
movement is very slow. Prices fetched are Rs.11 per sq. ft. and Rs.100 per kg
respectively. North Indian interest is almost absent. The forthcoming Parliamentary
elections can also be a reason for this. It is said that payments are very much
delayed and suppliers are suffering a lot. Small tanners are in a tight corner
not knowing how to manage their business.
Prices of raw hides and skins are erratic almost
everywhere in the country. Leading tanners are interested only in Miraj type of
quality raw goat skins at prices ranging from Rs.90 to 130 and even more
depending on quality and grades. Generally speaking the ruling prices for
ordinary type raw goat skins are from Rs.30 to 80 per piece depending on size,
quality and selection. There is no demand for lower selections at all.
Raw sheep skins sold in Centres like Dharwad are at
around Rs.90/100 per piece. Some of the Vaniyambadi tanners who are mostly
engaged in doing sheep nappa and suede leathers are covering their requirements
in this item.
Raw cow hides are sold at around Rs.550/600 and raw cow
calf skin (top grade) at around Rs.350/400 per piece. As there is no season,
buffalo hides are sold at around Rs.150 whereas good quality buffalo calf skins
are sold at around Rs.100 per piece.
Hong Kong Leather Fair
In the recent APLF leather fair held from March 13 to 15
at Hong Kong, according to reports, although good arrangements had been made
there, participation of leather importers was limited. Many Korean customers
were conspicuous by their absence. Business done in leather was patchy. Only
some big units were able to conclude some business. However it was a good and
fun filled get together for the visitors for future planning.
