CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

V.M. Khaleelur Rahman

In the Chennai leather market there is continuous good demand for almost all items of finished leather such as Nappa, Suede, Lining etc. at different prices depending on the quality and selection. So is the case in other parts of the state. Leather goods, garment and shoe manufacturers cover their requirements from leather centres like Vaniyambadi, Ambur, Melvisharam, Ranipet, Pernambut etc.

As usual activities are in full swing in E.I. Tanned goat skins. Shoe and leather exporters continue to buy their requirements at almost unchanged prices. Some exporters who have contracts for 3/5 sq. ft. glace kid are interested in Run selection at around Rs.65 but big quantities are not available in this selection in the market. However regular business is taking place in ABC suedes at around Rs.56 and All Suedes at around Rs.50. Grain selections are also on the move at the following prices: Run to IF Rs.60, LIF Rs.45, Lining Rs.40 and Rejection Rs.30. Some tanners have sold their lots combined at around Rs.50 instead of selling selection wise separately.

Wet blue and crust goat and sheep skins are also sold at almost unchanged prices. Raw skins prices are also ruling high in almost all centres in the country. Prices are lower only in those places where quality is not good.

Big leather and leather products manufacturers used to import wet blue hides and skins from European and Arab countries but it is not the case now due to reasons like internal problems in some Arab countries and weakening Rupee. However some big exporters like TATA are reported to have entered into big contracts for imports from some countries.

As far as exports are concerned, Far East customers are showing more interest for various goat, sheep, kip and calf leathers in comparison with European customers. There are reports of finished goat and lining leathers sold at around US$ 2 and 1.40 per sq. ft. respectively. Some reputed marks would have fetched far higher prices. There is also demand for various finished leathers from countries like South Africa but according to exporters prices are not workable despite higher exchange rates available now for Indian Rupee.

The latest quotations of exporters are given hereunder for ready reference:

According to reliable sources, there is heavy competition among manufacturers of leather products to sell their goods as many of them are not having big long time contracts. Activities are also limited in many factories. Many small factories which do job works for big factories are not able to get sufficient works at present and hence suffering a lot.
