CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

Chennai leather market continues to be slow in activities. Exporters of leather and leather products show interest only for some higher selections in tanned goat skins.

Local tanners are offering their Tanned Goat Skins at around the following prices:

Grain Selection:

3/5 sq. ft. Run Rs.80, Fifths Rs.70, IF Rs.60 and LIF Rs.50

5/7 sq. ft. Run Rs.85, Fifths Rs.75, IF Rs.65 and LIF Rs.55 per sq. ft.

4/6 sq. ft. R/V/IF combined Rs.60 per sq. ft.

5/8 sq. ft. R/V/IF combined Rs.65 per sq. ft.

Suede Selection:

3/6 sq. ft. All Suede Rs.46 per sq. ft.

5/8 sq. ft. All Suede Rs.50 per sq. ft.

Heel Grip:

4/6 sq. ft. Rs.32 per sq. ft.

5/8 sq. ft. Rs.35 per sq. ft.

Mesh:

4/7 sq. ft. Rs.28 per sq. ft.

Rejection:

3/8 sq. ft. Rs.20 per sq. ft.

Langda:

3 sq. ft. and up Rs. 12 per sq. ft. 

Tanners say that “only a small volume of business is taking place in the market and that too in some selected items and that selling has become a difficult task”. 

Activities in tanned and wet blue sheep skins are also very slow and tanners in places like Vaniyambadi are suffering a lot as buying interest is very limited.

Prices of raw hides and skins are ruling low everywhere in the country.

Tanners are in a tight corner not knowing how to sell their stocks.

EXPORT CONTRACTS

Leather importers in Europe, Far East as well as other countries are slow in purchases. There is no report of any business worth the name. Perhaps some big exporters may have sold some items to their regular customers. European holidays can be one of the reasons for this situation.

As market continues to be dull, tanners have reduced their productions considerably. Many sheep tanners have stopped doing tanned skins.

ACLE 2016

It is reported that ACLE 2016 ( All China Leather Exhibition 2016) held at Shanghai from 31^st August to 2^nd September 2016 attracted many Indian exporters. Some big exporters seem to have concluded some business. But its exact result is yet to be known.
