CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

In Chennai Leather Market there is continuous demand for higher grades of tanned goat skins - 4/6 sq. ft. Run, Fifth and Inf. Fifth are sold at around Rs.90, 75and 65 per sq. ft. respectively, 5/7 sq. ft. Run at around Rs.100 and 4/6 sq. ft. R/V/IF/LIF combined at around Rs.60 per sq. ft. Shoe and leather exporters show interest for these items. As regards lower selections, interest is very limited and goods are not moving easily.

Demand for tanned goat suede is also limited at around Rs.40 per sq. ft. in some reputed marks but all are not able to fetch this price. Many small tanners have sold this item at around Rs.38 per sq. ft. Local Rejection and Langda items hardly find buyers. Prices available are as low as Rs.13 and 10 per sq. ft. respectively. Some tanners have sold even at much lower prices than these as they cannot afford to hold them unsold for long.

Export Orders

Demand continues for F/C and S/C goat upper and lining leathers at around US$ 2.30 and 1.75 per sq. ft. respectively in reputed marks but quantities sold do not seem to be bulk. But small exporters are finding it difficult to sell their products.  It is hoped that things may change for the better slowly in the days to come.

As far as F/C sheep leathers are concerned, market is slow both at home and abroad.  It seems only Rejection item is of interest to some Japanese customers. Higher selections are very slow in movements. 4/6 sq. ft. Rejection is sold at around Japanese Yen 100 per sq. ft. where 5/7 fetches JY 105 or 110 per sq. ft. C&F by sea.
