CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET
V M Khaleelur Rahman
Activities are normal in the Chennai leather market. Exporters of leather and
leather products continue to buy E.I. Tanned Goat Skins, grain selections in
higher grades, R/V/IF 4/6 sq. ft. at around Rs.65 and 5/8 sq. ft. at around
Rs.80 per sq. ft.
Some sales are also taking place in 4/6 sq. ft. Suede and
Lining selections at around Rs.39 and 34 per sq. ft. respectively.
During the fourth week of August activities were very
much restricted due to Eid-ul-Azha festival holidays.
Reports received from different States reveal that prices of
Qurbani raw hides and goat skins varied very much depending on quality and
selection.
In Maharastra
particularly in Mumbai Qurbani raw goat skins were sold at around Rs.50 per
piece. In some other places like Miraj they fetched much higher prices. There
were no takers for Rejection skins.
In States like Kashmir raw hides and skins fetched very low
prices due to various reasons. Selling was very difficult.
As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, in places like Ambur,
Vaniyambadi, Gudiyattam, Pernambut etc. , Qurbani raw sheep skins were sold at around Rs.120 and raw hides at
around Rs.550 per piece.

Export Orders
As far as export is concerned, there is no report of any big
business. However some small business have taken place in S/C glazed goat upper and
lining leathers at around US$ 2.30 and 1.70 per sq. ft. respectively. It is reported that European as well as Far
East customers are slow in purchases.
Although tanners and exporters are finding it difficult to
get orders, some shoe manufacturers are able to get orders from their European
customers with their best efforts. But for their endeavours and continuous work
in their factories, the condition of the leather industry would have been
worse. It is to be noted that in Ambur about 25,000 people are employed in
different leather units.
