CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET
V.M.
Khaleelur Rahman
Chennai leather market is normal
without any big change. Exporters of leather and leather products, from Chennai
and other States, who have orders with them, show interest for E.I. tanned and
wet blue goat and sheep skins at different prices depending on quality and
selection.
The leather industry as a whole
is focusing its attention on the 31st India International Leather
Fair (IILF) to be held at Chennai Trade Fair, Chennai from 1st to 3rd
February 2016. As usual a large number of manufacturers of machinery,
chemicals, leather and leather products etc. from home and abroad are to
exhibit their products in the fair. It is going to be yet another excellent
meeting place for the people connected with the leather industry.
It is noteworthy that IILF is
getting increased popularity year by year from different countries of the
world. Many industrialists of India and other countries make it a point to
participate in it without fail.
E.I. Tanned Goat Skins
Local tanners are able to sell
their Lots at around Rs.75 and Run/V/IF/LIF at Rs.90/80/70/60 per sq. ft. respectively.
These are only just indications. Prices may vary depending on quality and
selection. There is good demand for Linings at around Rs.48 and Suedes are sold
at around Rs.50 per sq. ft. Local Rejections and Langdas are moving slowly as
big North Indian customers are not in the market. However some business has
taken place in these items at Rs.30 and 24 per sq. ft. Goods are easily
available to buyers.
A leading tanner is offering his goods as follows:
Goat V/IF and LIF 60/40% Rs.75
per sq. ft.
Stout Suede 8 sq. ft. Rs.57 and
5/7 Suede Rs.54 per sq. ft.
5/8 H/G Suede Rs.46 per sq.
ft.
Raw skins
In raw centres throughout the
country prices of raw hides and skins are lower but tanners prefer to buy only
good quality items by inspection.
In many centres of Maharashtra
and Andhra Pradesh the prices of raw goat skins are ruling at around Rs.140 per
piece. So is the condition in many other States. But in many centres in Tamil
Nadu and some other States where quality is good, prices are much higher.
Export Contracts
It is learnt that some exporters
have sold their S/C and F/C goat upper leathers at around US$ 2.50 and Lining
leathers at around US$ 1.60 per sq. ft. These are the regular prices at which
customers have been buying for long.
As far as business with Japan is
concerned, just one or two exporters seem to have sold their big size Suede leathers
All Suede and Rejection Suede at around JY 240 and 140 per sq. ft. C&F. but
generally speaking business is difficult.
Exporters feel that a lot has to
be done by the industry and the governments at the Centre and in the States to
set right the setbacks in growth and export.
Quotations of exporters are as
follows:
